Fit Fresh & Fun at 50+ Celebrates!
November 5, 2012 – The Fit Fresh & Fun at 50+ project creates a positive environment that not only encourages seniors to live a health and active lifestyle but provides them with the tools, information, and resources necessary to implement positive, long-lasting, lifestyle changes.
As the 65+ age category doubles in size over the next 40 years, it is critical that comprehensive preventative programs are available to older adults to help combat chronic conditions. If current health trends continue over 40% of seniors will suffer from obesity and nearly 80% of these seniors will develop obesity related diseases, including 4 out of the top 10 leading causes of death.
The good news is obesity and many obesity related diseases are preventable with proper health and wellness education, easy access to classes/services, and early detection of health issues.
The Fit Fresh & Fun at 50+ project helps to fill the gap in resources and accessibility by providing a weekly educational nutrition program called Great Starts at Goeske, a choice of 20+ weekly Exercise Classes, a monthly group meeting to track progress and provide support to members, and an annual Fifty and Better Health Fair. In its first year, over 50% of active participants have seen a decrease in their weight, body fat, and/or BMI. In addition, 75% of active participants show an increase in their endurance levels.
